A couple of weeks ago, we made THE TRANSITION in our house.
One I had said we would do just before Aubrey Kate went to kindergarten.
And only if she asked nicely.
But, as with so many other statements I have made as a mom, I ate those words.
Understand, she never actually climbed out of the crib. Never really attempted it. She's too cautious for that. However, she wasn't taking a nap every day and truthfully, the crib wasn't big enough for her to play in during what is now "quiet time."
Of course, there's the whole issue of going to the potty too. And, well, this Momma was tired of having to pick her up out of the crib three or four times during those two hours just for a potty break.
We were prepared for her first night to be rough. But it wasn't. She got up a couple of times right away. Just because she could. But then she settled down and slept peacefully all night.
Still totally freaks me out when she just comes walking into the living room in the morning or when she knocks on our door if we're not up yet (which, for real, has only happened once). And regardless of how many times she goes potty before bed, she inevitably still comes out to go potty at least twice. As long as it's before we go to bed, that's fine.
Although, I did catch her sitting at her cracked down watching TV one night. Not. Okay.
An actual nap is down to about every other day or maybe even every third day. We leave the curtains open and she has all kinds of books and animals to play with in her room. So that's what she does. Reads and plays with her animals.
This morning, after she scared the tar out of me walking in the living room all stealth ninja-like, she went right back in her room, closed the door and read for another half hour. Would probably have stayed in there if I hadn't insisted she get out of her nasty pull-up and dressed.
And possibly eat some breakfast.
I am so mean.
If she's tired enough, she'll lay down and go to sleep. The only problem is, she's doing that an hour into quiet time and then doesn't want to wake up. Creating the next problem...staying awake until 10 pm.
Overall, we have no real complaints. Waiting was good for us. Her cautious nature allowed us to do so and for that, we are grateful.
Her brother, who has made it his mission to figure out a way to climb the refrigerator (to what end, I have no idea), will never make it to three in a crib. Truthfully, we are feeling fairly fortunate he hasn't climbed out of the thing already. He's trying but so far, his little legs are still too short.
Below are some pictures of Aubrey Kate trying out her new big girl bed. Surprisingly, I didn't get all that emotional putting her crib bedding away. I loved her as a baby, and although three is a challenge, I am loving watching her grow up.
So I'm gonna set myself up for more word eating, but I think we'll be in this setup for a couple of years. Until she gets too long for it.
Then Chris and I will have to decide who wins the twin vs. double bed argument. But I bought twin bedding for my future little girl in 2001 so he better bring his A game and a stack of cash for me to redecorate.
Just throwing that out there.
Yeah for Aubrey Kate. Such a big girl now. I wonder if this means she gets the air mattress as Nana's now.
ReplyDeleteI vote for twin. I had a twin till I was 16, and it meant one thing - when company came over, I got to keep my bed. I think your double bed doubled as the guest bed at 3290 North Broken Bow.
Aww, what a sweetie looking up from her little bed. I'd recommend a twin, just based on our experience with John - we got a twin when we moved him into his new 'big boy' room and it's been perfect. He looks so small in it and it will probably fit him quite awhile (hopefully til he's 18;)) And the low price was an added bonus.
ReplyDeleteAlso I'm curious how long you put AK in her room for 'quiet time'? John seems to be gradually dropping his naps too. Am never sure what's considered the norm if he's not actually sleeping (an hour)?
I guess AK is ready for the air mattress when she comes to my house. Miller and Noah seem to like the set up. It's a good thing :)
