Ready for Rhys...

This is my 601st post.

Wow.

When I started in March 2008, would have never thought over four years later I'd be posting about our miracle little man's nursery.

What a might God we serve.

And praise Him, the nursery is done!

My vision for the nursery was something much more modern than, well, anything in my house.  Much less Aubrey Kate's vintage theme.

I knew I wanted orange and turquoise.  Not sure everyone was on board with the turquoise.  Chris thought navy blue would be better but I had zippo interest in creating an Auburn nursery.  There will be plenty of time for him to be all about Auburn.

Got lots of ideas from Pinterest too.  Found lots of nurseries with an accent wall.  Again, not sure everyone was on board with that.  Mom suggested I talk with my brother about how hard it was to do the stripes in my nephews' nursery.  And I knew he'd done that on flat walls.  The hideous textured walls we have out here added a new challenge.

So I did the only things I knew I could:  watched YouTube tutorials and prayed.

Chris was a rock star about the project.  I really thought he would fight me on it but he didn't.  He dove right in.  And thanks to our team work, it was all done in one day.

Let's not discuss the amount of Elmo/Curious George/Caillou watched during that one day.

Okay, enough with the talking.  On to the pictures!

Simple Ikea crib.  I wanted something sleek and modern.  This fit the bill nicely.  And the price was awesome too.

Found the turquoise and grey print at Hobby Lobby.  It was on sale half off.  Winning.

The white frame once was a silver mirror in our second bathroom but the mirror came out when we cleaned out the closet in Aubrey Kate's new room.  I decided a coat of white spray paint and the cross my sweet friend, Chelsea, gave us as hostess gifts would be perfect for the room.

The three frames on the bottom are also Ikea and I just put fabric from my stash in them.  I loved having colors on the wall.

Also an Ikea dresser as a changing table.  Perfect size and the drawers are nice and deep.  The "laundry hamper" next to the dresser is a basket I've had since we lived in Georgia (2000-2003).  I normally had Auburn blankets rolled up and put it in the bonus/playroom.  No need for that now so I made a liner out of two pillowcases and BAM!  Laundry Hamper!

I made this out of old faux wood blinds.  Of which our house had a good deal.  I tried cleaning them first.  Soaked them in Dawn and then bleach when the Dawn didn't work.  But the stains were not coming out and I simply refused to hang them back up.

Soooo...craft project!  I found out the ends of the blinds broke off pretty easily since Aubrey Kate managed to break the first one.  I like the jagged ends.  Then I just glued, painted and used my scrapbook stamps.  Turned out actually better than I had anticipated.  And incredibly lightweight.

This is our oversized chair from our living room set.  It was in the playroom but the growing toy stash, and a new kiddo to add to said stash, made it necessary for this chair to find a new home.  I used to feed and read to Aubrey Kate in this chair when it was in our playroom in Mansfield.  Thought it made sense to continue that for Rhys.  The smaller crib and no separate dresser makes it a perfect fit.  I love it underneath the window.

I made the pillow out of a napkin I found at Hobby Lobby.  I did have to buy the white pillow for inside but still, under $10 for a cute accent.

And the curtains are twin flat sheets from Wal-mart.  Sheets and table cloths make fabulous curtains.  Cheap too.

This is what I call "Someone please stop me from crafting!"  I saw this wreath (a zillion of them actually) on Pinterest and loved it.  My plan is to take it to the hospital for our room and then hang it on the front door for the first couple of weeks we're home.  So simple and bonus, I already owned everything I needed to make it.  I loved the way it turned out!

And here we are at the progression of the accent wall.  Chris painted the wall white when he painted the ceiling, baseboards and doors.

The next day, we measured out the grid and started taping.  Chris, the man and thus the one who is more logical, figured out the angle and then we taped off based on the initial line.  This took the longest amount of time!

From what I read, the key was making sure I used the driest brush possible.  I went with a small foam roller and, obviously, painted as dry as I could.  This is that first coat.  It really went quickly and by the time I had finished the first coat, it was dry enough to immediately do the second coat.

This is the third and final coat.  Almost all the tape has been covered.  It was super easy to do each coat.

Chris started taking off the tape.  Very.  Slowly.  Really, this was the moment.  We sort of held our breath.  If the paint bled through, the entire project was ruined.

Once all the tape was off, we let out our breath and looked at each other.  Holy moly.  We did it.  We did it!

There were a couple of minor imperfections but Chris fixed those quickly.  A few still remain but they are so minor, it wasn't worth trying to fix.  Honestly, it was our first attempt at something like this and I think we make a fantastic team.

Hope y'all enjoyed the nursery tour!  We had a really great time working on it.  Really, the accent wall day was such fun.  A full day with my husband working on a project?  Yes, please!

Rhys, we love you and hope you can see that in all the work we put into your room.
