Can you still get arrested for shoplifting if it’s less than 25 bucks worth of stuff?...

I know. I’m a little behind on the story-tellin’. See there’s this pregnancy thing. Can’t think about one thing other than it really.

Anyway, here’s the story from our weekend in OKC and my scrapbook store experience.

In the entire metroplex area, we have no scrapbook stores. Honestly, I’ve searched. It’s astonishing. So every time we go to OKC, I visit one of my two favorite stores. This time I thought I’d hit the smaller of the two since I was basically leaving Fanny alone just to fulfill my scrapbooking addiction.

She was understanding but the guilt was there.

I didn’t have anything specific in mind I needed to work on. I am pretty caught up (yes, Mrs. JT, I’ll post pictures soon. Maybe like November soon, but soon is a relative term). Regardless, I hated to pass up the opportunity to see what cuteness I just had to have that I didn’t even know existed.

The store is pretty small. Thanks to this outstanding economy, they downsized and basically shoved all the stuff that once covered a space twice their current size on top of itself. Their current size being that of a standard van. Yeah. It’s crowded. So basically, it takes a while to sort through all that stuff piled on top of stuff piled on top of stuff. And not knowing when I might be back there, I decided I really needed to take some time sorting.

I swear to you, I had not one single solitary concept of time while there. I was mesmerized by the paper and the embellishments. Not surprisingly, at some point, my hands just got too full so I decided to see if the one lone girl working there would let me leave some of my stuff on the counter. I walked up and noticed the little girl for the first time. I’m assuming since she legally must be 16 to work that she actually was but appearance-wise, she was pushing 13. Max.

And then I went back to shopping.

But this time, I was now aware of said 13 year old girl. And she was watching me. Not watching me like “Man, I wish I had her hair color” or “If that’s what early thirties looks like, I can’t wait.” No, it was much more of a “she’s been in here way too long to actually be shopping for scrapbook supplies. I bet she’s slipping stuff in her purse” watching. I tried to ignore her but you know that feeling you get when the weird guy at the mall is staring at you while you eat your food court Chinese food? Yeah, that’s the vibe I was getting’.

Needless to say, I wrapped up my shopping quickly and went to check out. I made sure I gathered all items previously put on hold as well as all the stuff I was carrying and presented them all in a broad display like fashion on her counter. She looked at it, looked at me and then reluctantly started to ring up the items. While carrying the stuff around, it’d felt like hundreds of dollars worth. But I was wrong.

It was $24.93.

Then I saw the clock on the wall behind Miss Teeny Bopper and about fell over when I realized I had left Fanny’s house almost two hours earlier.

Honestly, I am completely surprised the girl managed to NOT call the cops to arrest me on suspicion of shoplifting. Or just being generally crazy. Because what kind of person but a crazy shoplifter would leave her friend to spend two hours sorting through pretty paper?

  1. It's OK. I spent that two hours watching TV, so it's all good.

  2. I would. I don't have time to do much scrapbooking these days but I love the paper. I have a lot of it. Waiting in the wings. This year I made giant flowers out of scrapbook paper for my classroom. Pretty paper makes me happy. So I can completely understand.

  3. Hm...well, I ended up 'stealing' a packet of gelatin (valued about 70 cents) from Wal-Mart the other day; it slipped under the car seat in the shopping cart, so I didn't notice it until I put Bryton in the car. Being that he was fussing and V was be-bopping around, I didn't drag them back in to pay for it. Shhh...don't tell the police! :-)

  4. Not only could I but I have, numerous times. There's not much better than spending all the time you want to in a scrapbook store. The more "stuff" you have the better your chances of making that "perfect" page. Any scrapbook addict would agree with me, I'm sure. Love you, Martha
