Gratitude Friday…

Most people either hate surprises or they love them. Not a lot of wiggle room for most folks. Personally, I think it depends on whether or not I like the surprise. If the surprise is a weekend trip away with Chris, then I’m excited. If the surprise is a termite infestation in the house, then not so much. This week, we’ve had a few surprises and instead of being bummed by some, I chose to be grateful.

1. Lilies – Chris brought home lilies last week. For the most part, they were all closed but this week, they all slowly opened. And they are gorgeous. Normally, the smell of lilies gives me a headache but in our house, the smell is divine. Not as tight a space as in say Linda’s office. I loved looking at them this week and remembering how grateful I am for our marriage.

2. 90,000 mile service – Yeah, so Chris calls and says he’s attempting to not be depressed over the rather large service bill. Okay, so that wasn’t in the plans for this month. I too was bummed for a little while. Until I remembered that we have the money to pay it. Perspective is a nice thing. Yes, its money we had earmarked for something else but regardless, we have it. And for that, I am very grateful.

3. 8 miles – Sorry, still jazzed about this. Largely because I am so grateful to be healthy and active. Too many people can’t run eight miles. Lots of people don’t even want to try but there are those who physically can’t. Or even walk eight miles for that matter. Thank you Lord for a strong body.

4. Diagnosis – Sometimes the thing we are expecting is still a surprise. We think we know ourselves backwards and forwards, inside and out but when a doctor looks at you and says this is how it is, that’s a little unnerving. Relieved in a way to be validated but terrified of the road ahead. A dear friend got just such an expected surprise this week. I love her and can’t wait to see what the Lord has in store for her through this process. I’m not sure the world is quite ready for just how fabulous she’s gonna be!

5. The job – Have I mentioned my job lately? Seriously, it’s taken over my life. But, the flip side of that is, I am being challenged in new ways and I’m learning more about myself through those challenges. You don’t grow by doing the same things over and over and over again. I certainly didn’t ask for this role and for the most part, I haven’t enjoyed it but I’m starting to see some changes, a little movement in a positive direction. And I’m happy about that. The Lord has certainly heard my prayers for the staff and listened to me pray for wisdom. I am grateful He’s providing me the strength to overcome some of the obstacles and the restraint to hold my tongue. That’s an Empire State building sized hurdle for me!

I hope you found something to be grateful for in each little surprise this week. If not, I guarantee a surprise or forty will be just around the corner. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see what God has planned next! Have a great weekend!
