Gratitude Friday…

One of the joys of living outside of the state of Alabama is you get to miss all the Auburn/Alabama media junk. And I say “junk” because that’s largely what it is. Its weeks and months and years on end of talk, talk, talk. That state is a hard place to be a coach.

All that to say, I think Chris and I were the most surprised Auburn alumni on the planet when our coach of 10 years decided to leave The Plains on Wednesday. The reasoning behind his departure will be debated relentlessly by Auburn and Alabama fans alike for the next 9 months. And really, we’ll likely never know the whole story. Which is fine. At least, for me.

Regardless of the circumstances, our coach was by all accounts a Godly man. He was bringing the players to Christ. Encouraging them to be a “hard fighting solider” in the army of the Lord. Even when the circumstances around him were unfathomable, he held his head high and kept right on fighting. I hope those players he taught, prayed with and loved will continue to serve their Lord as they’ve seen their coach do these last 10 years.

So today, I am grateful for this man and the impact he had on those players’ lives, their families’ lives and the lives of generations yet to come. The impact on the Lord’s battlefield will be far superior to any impact on the football field. I trust the Lord has amazing things still in store for His hard fighting soldier. Much larger things than being a football coach.

  1. He didn't quit - you know they wouldn't be paying his 5.1 million dollar buyout if they didn't ask him to quit. Sorry ... I still live in Alabama.
