Final Va-ka stuff...
So here are my last va-ka stories. First of all, I would like to say I hate New York City. Although likely not for the same reasons others might.
I hate it because there are too many darn tourists.
And yes, I'm fully aware that I am a tourist.
Regardless, I get really frustrated with obnoxious numbers of people standing around in the middle of the busiest sidewalks in the entire free world just to talk to each other about where they want to go next or where they lost Grandma or why little Timmy is crying...again. Seriously, move over. Get out of my way. I have places to be.
Like the mile long line to get on the Downtown Loop Bus Tour. It literally wrapped around the block.
And holy heat wave was it hot in NYC. 98 degrees and we (yes, 3 1/2 college degrees between us) opted to sit on top of a double decker bus to tour the city.
Too bad I was wearing sunscreen instead of tanning oil otherwise I would have really felt like a greased pig roasting in a fire pit. Thanks to the sunscreen, I only sort of felt that way.
So we saw the garment district, the biggest Post Office in the US, Madison Square Garden, the Merrill Lynch Bull, United Nations, Audrey Hepburn's former brownstone and Macy's, all 11 floors and 1 city block of it. We only got off once and that was in China Town. I bought some gifts as we walked through to Little Italy for lunch.
I have to say, lunch was really good. Yes, I love pasta but likely the air conditioning made the food taste far better than it was in reality. We'll never know for sure but those are my suspicions.
On our way to our hotel lobby, having had to check out earlier that morning, to attempt to freshen up for our 4 hour flight home, we made a final stop at a local grocery store for a Diet Dr. Pepper. What I found almost made the entire day worth it.
We walked in to discover the most wonderful fruit bar I've ever seen. There were strawberries, pineapple, grapes, blueberries, kiwis, oranges, watermelon and on and on and on. Chris said, "Get some, babe, if you want" and $12 later, I was seated in the lobby with a take out container over flowing with the most delicious fruit I've tasted in a long while.
And an ice cold Diet Dr. Pepper.
Does it get much better than that?????
Our trip ended with an hour long cab ride through Queens to JFK, an almost 3 hour wait for our delayed 4 hour flight home. We landed at DFW around 10:45 pm on Friday night.
Here's the sappy part: I still didn't feel like we were home. DFW doesn't feel anymore familiar to me than JFK. We were landing in just another big city. It was really strange to feel that way. I did feel more comfortable when we got to the house. I love our house. I just pray we'll eventually find a church and meet some friends to fill it with.
Until then, I have some seriously cute sundresses. And no where to wear them. So if any of you would like to come visit for a weekend, come on over!
Oh, hush...didn't you read the "brief spurts of jogging mixed with mostly brisk walking" part? Of course I didn't run run. I'd have been passed out by the corner if I'd done that! I will definitely have to work up to the run run. And I'm not sure "Mom" and "outside running" belong in the same sentence. Getting her on the treadmill is hard enough. But yes, the deal is still there. If all else fails, we sign her up for WNTW. By the way, looks like the rest of the vacation was a hit. :-) Glad y'all got a break!
ReplyDeleteMom just got all indignant. She wants me to inform you that she walked on the treadmill at work today for 30 minutes. Make a note so I don't get in trouble with her.
