Gratitude Friday
This has been a long week. Both Chris and I have been sick with the “crud”. We’re not exactly sure what this is. There have been sore throats, runny noses, so on and so forth. In the midst of all that excitement, we also hosted an end of the year get together for the band directors. So in honor of the end of one band season and the beginning of the next (because they’re currently hosting their first marching camp today and tomorrow), this week I’m focusing on things to be grateful for as a band geek. Yes, I am proud.
1. An Identity – Everyone needs an identity in high school. Call it what you will a clique, a club, an attitude but regardless most every high school kids falls into some category. Band gives kids an identity and it’s not a bad one to have.
2. A Part of the Whole – Band was the first place I remember feeling like I was part of something greater than myself. If I dropped the flag or missed a kick, it was pretty obvious and if I did that at contest, I might cost our band their “1” rating. Band gives kids the opportunity to see themselves as a contributing member of a larger group. Sure, you can learn this in a lot of places but these kids learn it in band. And learning the lesson is the key.
3. Chill Bumps – What happens every time you see the Auburn Marching Band entering Jordan-Hare? You get chill bumps. Your heart starts racing. The crowd becomes almost electric with the anticipation of not only the game but the showmanship of the band’s parade and pregame. Now imagine being a member of that band? Multiply your chill bumps by a million and you’ll know what it’s like to perform.
4. Creation – Most kids will never be best selling novelists, Oscar winning actors, Nobel Prize winning scientists or even top earning salesman of the year. But music gives them the opportunity to create. Every time they play a piece of music, it is different from the last time and different from how it will sound the next time. They are the creator of that unique sound. No one can take that away.
5. Music – There are so many wonderful verses in the Bible about singing our praises to the Lord. Even about playing instruments and dancing for the Lord. He blessed us with the ability to sing, play and dance. We crave music and expression. How many times have you been singing along to a song in the car truly worshiping the Lord through your wonderful, unique, creation of music?
