Gotta love those ruffles…
Yesterday morning I was accosted by a co-worked. She was just dying to tell me that she had tried on her swimsuit for her husband the night before and he had said she needed a new one. He told her it looked like she’d bought it in 1985. She bought it 3 years ago. My immediate question was “What exactly defines the style of the swimsuit as retro-1980’s?” She wasn’t sure. Likely the husband was speaking without really knowing what he was saying. I said, to me, the 80’s swimwear was defined by one thing: Ruffles.
Now I’m not sure why she felt a burning need to share this story with me. I feel pretty certain we’ve never discussed swimwear, the 1980’s or our husband’s fashion sense but there it was. I was equally surprised to think that she was under the impression I was thoroughly aware of my surroundings during that decade when I grew from 4 to 13. Apparently, I look older than I am.
Regardless, this got me thinking about that decade and how much I really do love it. Chris jokes that if you come to our house for a party, you will hear 80’s music. It’s a rule. I do love the music. And I love other random stuff too.
So for your Thursday enjoyment and because I want to share, here are the reasons I love the 1980’s.
1. The Cosby Show – Dr. Huxtable. He rocked. Bill Cosby still rocks.

1. The Cosby Show – Dr. Huxtable. He rocked. Bill Cosby still rocks.
2. Pepsi Clear & New Coke – seriously, who thought those would catch on?
3. Bo Jackson – Bo over the top. Even in those short lose fitting jerseys, he’s still cool.
4. Say Anything – Ah Lloyd. Do you think he ever figured out what he wanted to do with his life besides be with Diane?
5. Let’s Go Girl – A complete work-out system with pink head band, wrist bands, belt, work-out mat, cassette tape and instruction book. Apparently, we all wanted to be Jane Fonda; we just didn’t know it.
6. Cabbage Patch Kids – Still can not believe parents stood in line for DAYS to get their daughters one of these pudgy dolls. I had to save up for my first one. She was a red head.
7. Air Supply – Really, is there anything offensive about this duo? Maybe the hair.
8. MTV – I would rush home to see the latest video! Now you have to get up at 4:00 am to see the videos. The rest of the day is reality television.
9. Hairspray – Such a great idea to get a tight perm and then brush and tease the darn thing to a height and width no normal head of hair could ever achieve on its own.
10. Ruffles – Yes, I had a ruffle-covered swimsuit. Even at 9 years old I remember thinking how slimming those things were. All because they came to a point in the center.
There you have it! I could go on for hours but I think most of the list would be TV, film and music focused. I try to cover a more broad range of topics when I’m listing my random favs. Its my attempt at being well rounded. Sad, I know.
