We’re at #8 in case anyone’s keeping track…

So I’m sure you’ve noticed that it’s January 17th and I have yet to post Pumpkin’s monthly photos with Aubie and her note.

Well, see. We have ear infection number eight.

Eight. In five months. Eight.

Meaning that, with the exception of last night, Pumpkin has been not all that picture ready. Or interested. In anything. Other than being in my lap.

She didn’t nap well. Didn’t play well. She’s didn’t sleep well at night. She’s refusing to eat vegetables and rice cereal. Refusing to the point where when we put her in the high chair, she starts crying. Big ole crocodile tears. Unless we can convince her to take one bite to show her it’s just fruit. That she’ll eat.

So we went to see the doctor this morning for her regularly scheduled nine month well baby visit. Only she wasn’t well. Technicality really.

She’s still hovering around the 18 ½ pound mark. That puts her in about the 35% for weight. Makes sense what with her refusal to eat and all.

Height is good. 29 inches, 73%.

But head circumference. That’s where we shine. We’re off the charts with that. Literally, over 100%.

And yep. That left ear has fluid.

Doctor gave us several ENT recommendations. That’s right. Tubes.

He asked about developmental concerns and my only question was, is it normal for a baby to figure out how to say something and then just stop. Like last month when she started talking Japanese with her “wi, ti, ki” thing. She started and then poof. She stopped.

He seems to think this could be directly related to the fluid in her ears. He says he’s seen kids get all kind of verbal once they can hear clearly.

Awesome.

If I could, I’d get her tubes put in this afternoon. Seriously. This is just breaking my heart. As long as she’s on the antibiotics, she’s fine. But about a week after we’re off them, another ear infection hits.

I am so over this.

Apart from that, she looks good.

Okay, so that’s not entirely true.

Her hemoglobin levels are a little low. That’s not surprising considering she’s refusing to eat the stuff with iron in it. Like vegetables and rice cereal. We have to go back next month to have that rechecked.

The good news is that we don’t have to do the helmet. It took what felt like 22 years for insurance to approve the helmet. We went back earlier this week to measure and her head hasn’t gotten worse. It’s exactly the same. Measurement-wise. But I’ve been watching the flat side and it’s not as flat. It looks to me like it’s rounding out a little bit. One side still sticks out further than the other but I’m honestly not all that concerned about that.

We asked the doctor and he says, skip it.

Fantastic.

At least I think so. Chris is still concerned. But that’s the way we work. I’m less worried. He’s more.

It’s not like it’s affecting her intelligence. Girly figured out pretty quickly I was putting rice cereal on the spoon and then dipping it in fruit to get her to eat it. She started eating just the stuff on the front of the spoon.

Daggum. It is so annoying when your kid is smarter than you.

  1. I'm so sorry that your poor baby girl has had so many ear infections. My son went a whole year without one, and then we were pledged with one after another. We did tubes and adenoid removal almost one month ago. Jackson started talking, or babbling and completely stopped everything because of his ears. He even stopped calling me momma, it sucks! A month later, he isn't magically talking again. However, he is speaking some sort of language. They say it will take some time for him to understand because he couldn't for so many months. Good luck with your ENT!

  2. So sorry for little AK. I bet those tubes help out a lot.

Ah, insurance companies, the sweetest, most caring corporations since Slugworth Chocolates Incorporated. Glad she won't need the helmet, though.

  3. Poor baby! The ENT should help out with this. She'll catch up with the talking. Your very observant and your both very verbal with her it will level out. ENT bound!
I'm so happy about no helmet. She would not have liked that. The Auburn bow/headband was a struggle on BCS game day. She's very determined when's she's after something. :)

  5. Boo for yucky ear infections! I hope that the tubes can happen quickly and do the trick!

Don't worry AK, we'll be patient for your picture...I can't stand it when someone puts an awful pic of me on Facebook. Your mom is too nice to do that to you here! xoxo
