We are a DFA family.
Dual Football Allegiance
Don’t you just love a good acronym?
So yes, in our family we speak both SEC and Big 12 (soon to be the Big 10 or maybe still the Big 12 with only 10 teams because that would make total sense).
There aren’t many of us out there. I mean, football ties run deep so to make the bizarre choice to cheer for two teams is unique (how’d you like that honey? Not “very unique” which is what I typed first. Just for you babe.)
I’d like to give a big Mississippi State shout out to A.E.! A fellow SEC grad and Big 12/10/12/whatever wife. That little munchkin of yours will be so well rounded having a Bulldog/Jayhawk family in which to grow up.
For those reading and you don’t know, Chris and I both graduated from Auburn. Three years later, we moved to OKC after Chris was accepted into the graduate conducting program at OU. We spent four glorious years with The Pride.
Glorious for me because I got to do all the fun stuff and put in zippo work.
Auburn and OU hold two totally different places in my heart.
Auburn to me is all about family and tradition. The football (and all the other sports cause we do play others and win some nice trophies too) is part of it but not the main part. I literally cry singing the alma mater and I’ve been known to hoard orange tee-shirts like they were gold. I grew up spending Saturdays on the Plains with family and friends listening to stories of my parents’ days there. Back when Dad had hair and Mom’s only requirement was a trailer in the shade. I spent four years at Auburn during which I had to read and write four separate papers on “The Heart of Darkness”. Sad but of all my classes that stands out to me the most. Learned a little about who I was but a lot about who I was not which is equally as important.
Oklahoma represents flat out the most fun time in my life. Saturdays with Chris. High scoring offenses. Road trips on a bus for 36 hours. It will be hard to top those four years. We love the college atmosphere and the fact that Norman had a Harold’s Outlet made game day that much sweeter (Rest in Peace Harold’s). For me, I had the joy of watching my husband grow from a kid to a man. He might disagree but I think he learned who he was and who he was not more so at OU than at Auburn. All in all, I don’t think, as a couple, we could have been happier.
I also genuinely love the fact that too many times to count, I have left the room only to come back and discover OU has scored. Again.
And now you understand our DFA-ness. And the fact that Pumpkin will frequently be photographed in Auburn and OU attire.

She’s warming up her pointing finger since we “point” during “Boomer Sooner!” I made the onesie during her morning nap Saturday. But I was a bad OU mama and didn’t have a crimson bow. That folly has now been corrected. I didn’t want her to be embarrassed any longer.
This week, the word “season” has been floating around a lot. You know as in this “season” of life. And so because it IS football time and because I love both of those “seasons” of my life, I have to say I am very grateful for each of them.
Although I’m not at all sure how we will convey to Pumpkin how much we “suffered” in college both at Auburn and OU. Really, we are completely spoiled. All we can say is we didn’t have a crystal chandelier and we all know how tragic that is.
Thank you Father for all the seasons of our lives!
War Eagle and Boomer Sooner ya’ll!
I knew my love for you ran deep, but I didn't really know the full extent. Let's examine...1. The SEC tie that binds, 2. Two IVF's, 3. Sisters in Christ...Sure those are hard to top BUT I think you have found a way!!! What is it you ask? H-A-R-O-L-D-S. Oh, my heart and my joy. Harold's closed the month M. and I were married. He has NO idea the trauma his paycheck escaped. Since then, shopping has been and endless charade of trying to find clothes that feel like me. Do you get what I'm saying? I love you, Harold's and you, too, Robin! Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteRobin, I truly understand your post! We love AU for the same reasons you do, and we love Iowa for the same reasons you love OK. Those were some wonderful years, just the two of us, away from home, growing into a deeper relationship with each other because we were away from either of our families. NOW we love State for a different reason all together! We love State because it has loved us for the last 5 years. It has provided a wonderful job for Craig, many wonderful friendships, and an understanding that you don't have to be a great football team to still enjoy football season. :) I will admit that JUST this year I've gotten into the MSU excitement, but I think that's normal since I don't work at the university. I also think, (though lots of our AU friends disagree,) that we can have several allegiances. MSU pays the bills, and so we cheer each week for that team. When we go home, we can put on our orange and blue or black and gold and cheer for our other teams. :) Anyway, thanks for your blog. I thought it was great! FYI, Jack ran through the house last week with an Iowa shirt on, ringing his cowbell, yelling "war eagle!" I think he's got 'em covered! :)
