Finally, a Star Trek I can get on board with…

By Sunday afternoon, it was time to deal with the galaxy. At least the galaxy where we boldly go to seek out new life and new civilizations.

I am the daughter of a Trekie. Not a costume wearing kind. Just the kind who watches every show, reads every book and knows them all by heart.

It’s a small but distinctive difference.

I’ve watched my fair share of original episodes and seen every movie. At least I think I have. Dad was committed to exposing us to all of the cultural necessities in life. Saturday afternoons following yard work and house cleaning, the original episodes came on. Sometimes, I would watch them with him. Time with dad was good regardless of his taste in television.

So when this new one came out and we saw the trailer, I volunteered for Federation duty.
1. Kirk is pretty darn cute.
2. There was an action scene involving an 8 year old kid, a convertible vintage sports car and the Beastie Boys.
3. It had nothing to do with saving whales.

And I loved it. Really, as far as sci-fi action adventure goes, it was right up there.

An awesome distraction.

But don’t worry. I’m still the hopeless romantic. I came right home and watched the end of Notting Hill. That scene at the end with Will reading on a bench and Anna watching the kids playing gets me every time.

Live long and prosper.

  1. You know, I've never seen a single episode of Star Trek. Maybe I'll make this one my first voyage. :)

  2. OK time for the middle aged Trekie to weigh in on the latest installment:
    1. Pretty good action flick
    2. Added nothing to the overall Star Trek saga because the firt sceen changed history, thereby making all other installments null and void.
    3. Killed off Spock's mother early on. Any Trekie knows she had a profound effect on Spock and his father in later years. Now we don't know what will happen.
    4. Nurse Chappel now has a rival in Spock's affection in Uhurha. In the old episodes there was never a hint of anything between her and Spock. Captain Kirk is another story.
    5. Captian Pike is considerably older in this version. In fact he gave up the Enterprise in The Managerie after being severely injured while Spock was his First Officer. This changes that storyline.

All in all, this was not a real Star Trek story, maybe an alternate universe story.

Other than that I enjoyed the actors in their roles except for the new Spock, who we all know is Skylar on Heroes and is not a nice dude.

  3. Wow. When you said your dad was a Trekie...uh, you REALLY meant it. And shows what I know, I always thought it was Trekkie...with two Ks. Oh, well. At any rate, check out today's post. I gave you an award.
