Happy Birthday Mrs. JT!

Oddly enough, I have two of my middle school yearbooks at home. That’s odd because most everything pre-college is packed up in a box still taking up space in my parent’s house somewhere. I keep forgetting to bring the darn thing to Texas. So I decided to look through the yearbooks to see if there was a picture of Mrs. JT and me from back in the day. There wasn’t. There were some of her and some of me, in all our big, bad hair glory, but none of us together.

However, there were 2 long yearbook signatures to read. Those were a hoot. Largely because sometime during the 8th grade, our little group of friends decided to give ourselves nicknames. I was “Stardust” and she was “Sunshine”. I have no idea why we did that. Although I know there are some notes in that box in Alabama that I saved which may hold the key. Anyway, I read through her mini-letters to me and was struck by something.

The dates have changed, the trials have certainly changed and thank the Lord, our hair has changed but her friendship has not. Her notes to me where full of the same things she still says and honestly, I am humbled by her unselfish, caring, devoted spirit.

When I look back on my life and remember the lowest valleys, she was always there with me listening, praying, laughing, supporting. She very literally has taught me what it means to be a friend.

So today, my precious friend, I hope you are celebrated. I hope everyone around you lifts you up and tells you every moment they can how blessed they are to have you in their life. Because they are. And I am.

In fact, you were right all those years ago. You are my Sunshine. I love you.
