Happy Birthday Jesus!

Twenty-nine years ago, my family started a birthday party tradition.  Every Christmas Eve, we have a good old fashioned birthday party (meaning its simple and minus blow-up space walks in the front yard) for the most important member of our family.  Jesus.  Mom bakes a cake and we put the number of candles on the cake based on how many years we've been having the party. Dad reads the story of Jesus' birth out of Luke, we light the candles, sing "Happy Birthday" and then chow down on cake.

It's such a small thing really.  But it has always served as reminder each year what the real meaning of Christmas is.  Kinda like the Christmas song that says His birth as was a simple way to save the world.

How hard it is for humans, both during the time of His birth and most certainly now, to believe that a baby was our Savior.  Shouldn't He have arrived with trumpets blaring dressed in fancy clothes and wearing a crown?  How could this little baby be all there is?

Yet, this little child did save us.  His love for us is so overwhelming we can never understand. He didn't need trumpets or fancy clothes or a crown.  All He wanted was for us to trust in Him and have the faith to follow where He will lead.

More so than ever before, Chris and I feel amazed that God chose to send His son as a baby. Creating a life is a miracle every single time.  And we're all just human.  We are more in awe of that little miracle in a stable than we have ever been before.  We are humbled and so blessed to be loved by our Lord.
