Oh Midlothian, why didst thou forsake us?
Saturday was Chris’ band’s first marching festival of the season. The band left the football game after half time on Friday night so they could come on home and get some rest before the marathon day on Saturday.
Let’s see by a show of hands how many people think these teenagers actually went to bed early on Friday so they’d be rested for Saturday?
Yeah, exactly.
Saturday morning, they met a little before 8:00 am to start rehearsals and then headed to Midlothian, TX for the festival. They were scheduled to perform for preliminaries at 1:30 pm. I had to paint a house on Saturday morning so I made it just in time to see them perform.
Alright, now look, I could hear your mouths hitting the floor in shock. Sorry, I have no physical proof that I was painting a house so you’ll just have to trust me on that.
The kids did a great job and one day, when I remember to take the camcorder, I’ll get a video of this year’s show and post it for you. The theme is “Dance to the Music” and goes through all kinds of dance music through the centuries. I would tell you the songs but that would spoil the fun. If by the end of the season I still don’t have a video posted, then I’ll end your suspense and just tell you. But it’s really cool…
However, I’m not sure the parents are in love with all the stuff they have to roll onto the field for this show but who cares what the parents want.
In Texas, if you do well in prelim’s then you get the honor of performing again that night for finals. They made finals so they had an hour to eat, change, warm-up and be back in the line-up. The band boosters do an OUTSTANDING job of feeding the kids. They had breakfast tacos for brunch before they left school and then Ci-ci’s pizza for dinner. One of the kids was grumbling about the soda selection and a band parent reminded him that this was not a disappointment in life. Actual, real disappointments will come later.
That particular parent and I get along rather well.
We finally found out the results of the day around 9:30 pm that night. Seriously. And we came in 9th out of 10 finalists.
Chris divided his Sunday between watching TV, eating, napping and listening to the judges’ tapes. I could hear most of the tapes (yea me!) and I have to say, even I was pretty frustrated at the feedback. Not because it was negative or unflattering or even rude, but because there was almost none. All the judges liked the show, had a few suggestions and then still put us in 9th place. Now you tell me how that’s supposed to help the band perform better for their next festival this weekend?
Anyway, I had another fabulous allergy attack as I was leaving the stadium Saturday night so I stopped at the Midlothian Wal-Mart for supplies.
They close at 10:00 pm. Really, I had no idea that was even an option for Wal-Mart’s…anywhere.
So to wrap up: Long day, poor soda selection, great food, 9th place and a Wal-Mart that closes before most 9 year olds are in bed these days.

I’m good with not going to Midlothian again. Ever.
Did they have mac and cheese pizza? I know you're partial.
