The View…

Yesterday, we moved into our new office building. It was an existing building that we purchased from another company in town. We are sharing the space for now. I’m currently on the 19th floor but will be moving up to 20 once the remodeling up there is done.

In OKC I had a very nice office with a great view of the people roaming around campus. It was stuffed to the brim with files that I never used but in 3 years, I never got rid of either. There were pictures and maps on the wall but none of them belonged to me. Blank space? A picture gets hung there. There were items for projects, piles for future events and in case someone ever needed an extra chair, 2 of those, despite the fact that I can only think of 1 time when someone came in, sat down and closed the door.

So needless to say, I never felt like that office was mine. There had been several other women in that office over the years and although my name was on the door, I always felt like it was just on loan. I feel certain the lovely woman who is in there now does not share that same view. She’s managed to clean out those darn files. Hip, hip hooray for her!

The office I moved into down here was a gray cubical. No window, no light, no drawers, not one redeeming quality except as long as I had an office, I had a job. The CEO told me to put up some pictures, make it homey, like your office in OKC was. So I did. I put up pictures that didn’t belong to me and brought in a plant from a luncheon someone had to attend and didn’t want any more and hung pictures I printed on the copier of my family. It looked about as warm and inviting as a gray cubical can be.

But again, none of that was really mine. But the truth is all offices are on loan to you in some way. I can be replaced pretty easily and I’m very aware of that fact.

However, this new job down here has certainly changed my view of not only my position but also of my office. I now have a need for walls and a door and a chair and well, in general, I prefer sunlight over anything else so a window would be nice, but that’s not a need per se. So during these past few months when we’ve been watching the remodeling and working on floor plans, new job assignments, etc, etc, I honestly was too busy to think about my office. I knew where it was and I’d visited it a couple of times but never really invested any major thought into it.

However, when I walked in to my office yesterday morning, I discovered a reason to love this office. The view. I don’t care if it is just a loaner, I’m lovin’ it.
