“He ain’t heavy. He’s my brother.”

Today is my brother’s 28th birthday. Hard to believe really. He’s the kid I used to tickle mercilessly with my hair. The kid who cried when he saw me in the halls of our kindergarten. The kid who dug a hole in our backyard for no apparent reason other than to dig a hole with his friends. The kid who fell asleep at my kitchen table in college while his laundry was washing.

No longer “the kid” he’s a man now with a wife and child of his own. I love him more than I could ever express and certainly more than I imagined I would when I was tickling him. I look at the person he’s become and burst with pride. The past year has been hard on his family with illness and a new baby. If I could, I would take all that worry and stress off of him and on myself. I wish I could give him a hug and make it all go away. Tickle him with my hair and make him laugh like a carefree child. Come home to find him waiting for clean laundry and maybe some spaghetti.

But I can’t do any of that. Instead I will pray. Pray harder than I ever have before. Pray that he will find rest. Pray that he will feel the Lord’s arms around him. Pray the Lord will show him His plans for his life in a very real way. Pray that he will find comfort in his wife’s sweet arms and his child’s precious laugh.

So dear brother, Happy Birthday from me, your sister who feels so blessed just to have you in my life. Doesn’t get much better than having the coolest guy, the smartest guy and the most giving guy I know as my brother.

  1. Thanks for the kind post, and thanks for coming this weekend. I'm definitely not cool or smart, but I'll take the compliment.

  2. That was very sweet. We are praying for Adam as well. We always have been, but not like now. He needs to take care of himself to be there for his family. It is a helpless feeling not to be able to make this stress all go away for him. He's always hid it well. You remember the dentist told us how bad he had ground his teeth down that they looked like an old person teeth? He is a great person, and so are you!
