My shopping skills long ago became part of our family lore. And in most instances, part of our family’s joking as well. When I was a kid, mom would take us out for our two big shopping trips a year - just before school started and during spring break. Immediately after returning home, I would take everything out of the bags and start trying it on. I’d mix and match old with new and pair outfits with shoes and different hair styles. Of course, all that work required a mini fashion show where I would display the new me to my family. I gave up the fashion shows several years ago once I realized my husband really wasn’t that interested. Now I take everything out of the bags, remove the tags, adjust the hem on any pants, iron everything and hang it nicely in my closet.
While the shows may have ended my love of new clothes has not. Some women are “hunters” who simply shop for the thrill of shopping. Sure that can be fun but since I am a bargain shopper and very specific about what I am looking for, the experience can be tiring and frustrating but when you find that little something, a tee shirt, a pair of shoes, a necklace, well, then it’s worth it. Then comes the best part - getting to wear something special. Yes, I love shopping but more than that I love the way I feel in something new. Clothing says so much about who you are. You can try and deny that all you want but that’s a risk I’d rather not take.
For the past year, I’ve managed to resist the urge to purchase. Various reasons contributed to that decision but most of those are taken care of. Now, I find I’m more driven than ever. Being in a new city, at a new job, in a new house, all leaves me pretty lonely. But there’s something about a new pair of trouser jeans or some green sling back wedges that makes me feel good. I ask can you ever really have enough jeans? Isn’t each pair unique? Can you have too many tank tops? Even if you wear them 5 days a week? New clothes make me feel good. You can call it whatever you want - shopaholic, addiction, weakness, even a sin. You can tease me mercilessly (and believe me, my family does) but you can’t tell me it doesn’t feel good to wear something new. Even if that feeling only lasts a day, it’s still worth it.
So be free! Go buy yourself a new tee shirt! They cost $8 at Target. It’s not about the cash you drop – it’s about feeling special. Even for a day.
